Summary

Remains of a medieval open field system have been identified within the vicinity of Berwick Manor House. The remains comprise three blocks of open fields with remains of strip lynchets. To the south of Berwick Manor House Farm there are also several small close banks. Five well developed strip lynchets are present to the southeast of the farm. To the north is a flight of five strip lynchets and to the east are ten strip lynchets. (RCHM) The features are visible as low earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs {1,2}. The site was digitally plotted for the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping project.

Full Description

Remains of a Medieval open field system have been identified within the vicinity of Berwick Manor House. The remains comprise three blocks of open fields with remains of strip lynchets. To the south of Berwick Manor House Farm there are also several small close banks. Five well developed strip lynchets are present to the southeast of the farm. To the north is a flight of five strip lynchets and to the east are ten strip lynchets.

There are 3 blocks of open fields with remains of strip lynchets: South of Berwick Manor House Farm. SY522894, including several small close banks; South-East of the farm are 5 well developed strip lynchets at SY528893, adjacent to which are several short lands 110 yards long. To the North at SY528894 are a flight of 5 strip lynchets over 300 yards long, facing East. East of the farm are 10 strips each 130-170 yd long at SY527897. <1>

The features are visible as low earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs <2-3>. The site was digitally plotted for the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping project.
