Full Description

A published note reporting the finding of: 'Horseshoes of mediaeval and later types. (a) Heath Farm, Owermoigne. (i) 1955.11.1. Horseshoe with plain edge ; slightly concave hoof-face (?), 7 nail-holes, suggestion of a calkin, but corroded ; about 5 oz. The type seems to begin in the 14th century, but has a long life, and is not very distinctive for dating. (ii) 1955.11.2. Approaching 'keyhole' type, the inner edges of the open end splaying outwards ; corroded but apparently 6 nail-holes set in a fullered groove, a feature that seems to occur first in the late 14th century, and is common in post-mediaeval shoes ; about 5.5 oz. I would not like to date this before the 17th or 18th century. Both the above were found by the donor, Mr. F. L. R. Hannam.' (1)
