Full Description
C18 landscape and lake with early C20 formal gardens, considerably restored and developed post-1949, 11ha. Surrounding park and agricultural land at most extensive c.440ha, now in divided use and ownership. Garden and landscape activity uncertain before C18, though parkland to north retains traces of a formal avenue, and another formal avenue connects the 2 houses. <1>
The park was laid out between 1774 and 1787 by John Pitt, with extensive tree planting having taken place by the late 19th century. Elements of gardens laid out during the late 16th century still survive. Much of the current formal gardens date to 1918-1920 and were laid out by Sir Cecil and Lady Hanbury. A programme of restoration took place from 1990. <2>
