Summary

Bronze Age bowl barrow, one of an extensive linear barrow cemetery running along the ridgeway. In 1972 this monument was reported as 85 feet in diameter with a mound about 10 feet high, apparently with original chalk capping, and an encircling ditch around 105 feet in diameter. Has been ploughed. Visible as a cropmark ring ditch with internal bank and central pit/ hollow on aerial photographs {1}. The site was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.

Full Description

Grinsell recorded this barrow as 35 paces in diameter and 9 feet in height. <2>

Round barrows on Ridgeway Hill: 'G' Ditched bowl (?) (66568645) 85 yds. S E of 'F'. Diam. 85 ft., ht. 10 ft., apparently with original chalk capping. V.A.P. CPE/UK 1934, 1061, suggests ditch about 105 ft. in diam. Ploughed. <4>

G SY 66578645. Bowl (?) barrow, diameter 36.0m, height 1.8m. All these barrows are in arable and have been ploughed. None has a visible ditch. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 on MSD. <5>

Visible as a cropmark ring ditch with internal bank and central pit/ hollow on aerial photographs <8>. The site was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.
