‘STINSFORD (SY 704915). In March 1978 an intensive field walking survey of Stinsford Parish was initiated by the archaeology students of the Dorset Institute of Higher Education, under the direction of Peter Woodward for the Dorset Archaeological Committee.
The objective of the project was to establish patterns of Neolithic and Bronze Age land use and settlement along the valley of the River Frome by the systematic recovery of knapped flint debris from the surface of ploughed fields. By relating the resulting distribution patterns to the soils, topography of the area, and the surviving monuments of the period, it is hoped that a more detailed understanding of the period can be realised.
The first area available for analysis was Lanes Close, a field of 13 hectares to the east of Slyer’s Lane. The characteristics of the flint collected were Early to Middle Bronze Age date, and finds included more than 50 scraping tools, several cores and numerous secondary worked flakes. The distributions of the various categories of flint suggested a ‘habitation’ focus in the south-west corner of the field (around SY 70459152). In addition to the prehistoric flint material other finds were noted and collected including Roman and medieval pottery and a silver penny of Edward I, minted at Durham (found at SY 70419156).’
