Full Description

An "ancient interment" was discovered at Walterston, Dorset "on a farm belonging to the Earl of Ilchester, tenanted by Mr Genge. It consisted of a rude cist, formed of unhewn slabs fourteen or sixteen in number and contained the bones of a full-grown person. The cist was about six feet long, and two feet in width at the broadest part, fifteen inches at the narrowest. From indications it would appear that the cist was formerly covered with a barrow.

The skull was rather narrow and low at the brow, and broad at the parietal bones; the teeth much worn". (Walterston is the former spelling of Waterston which appears in the form of Waterston House, Lower Waterston and Waterston Lane at SY 735951 on OS plans.

Higher Waterston is also shown at SY 725954). <1>
