Monument record MDO24693 - Mound on Sheep Down, Winterbourne Steepleton

A mound is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. Its date and function are uncertain; it is possible that it is the remains of a Bronze Age barrow.

Three gorse covered mounds with the superficial appearance of bowl barrows, situated on a N. facing slope in
pasture. All the features have ragged profiles and are composed of flinty material.
A) SY60528812 : 11.0m x 8.5m x 1.0m high.
B) SY60538816 : 13.5m x 9.0m x 1.0m high.
C) SY60568815 : 16.0m x 8.0m x 1.5m high.
The proximity of old gravel workings primarily suggests the mounds to be waste dumps, or possibly field clearance heaps. <1>

A mound, approximately 7.2 meters in diameter, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs <2> and was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project. The date and function of this feature are uncertain; it is possible that it is the plough-levelled remains of a Bronze Age barrow.
