Full Description

A chapel of ease to Whitchurch Canonicorum, dedicated to Saint Gabriel. It is a 13th century building, mentioned in 1650 when it was in need of repair, and has been disused since 1841 when a new chapel was consecrated at Morcombelake. <1>

The ruined chapel of Saint Gabriel is of local rubble and flint with freestone dressings. There is little evidence of date, but the south doorway is of late 14th century date which may be that of the nave of the building. The chancel was rebuilt at some uncertain period and the south porch is also an addition of uncertain date. The walls are standing in places to a height of 9 or 10 feet, but the west wall has fallen and there is a large gap in the north wall at the junction of the nave and chancel. <2>

Description and dating of Authorities 3 and 4 accepted. The simple rectangular building has walls still standing up to 3.0 metres high, but the whole is overgrown and in a state of near collapse. See photographs. <5>

The foundations of the medieval (14th century) chapel of St Gabriel are visible on aerial photographs, they were digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset). <11>
