Earthwork remains of a Medieval field system with strip lynchets. Visible as earthworks on aerial photographs {1}. The site was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.

Full Description

(Centred SY 674850) A series of pronounced parallel strip lynchets, under grass and up to 3.0m. high. <1>

"Strip lynchets of the former Bincombe Parish cover some 60 acres south-west and south-east of Lower Bincombe Farm (around SY 675850)" (See plan with SY 68 SE42). <2>

Flights, of contour-following, and parallel strip lynchets, of probable Medieval date, cover some 30 acres principally on the steep N. facing slope above Hellwell Bottom (SY 675851) S. of Lower Bincombe Farm. Widths of treads vary from 4.0m. to 14.0m. and riser heights from 1.0m. to 4.5m. Terraces extend for up to 350.0m. in length in an E-W direction. Best preserved examples are centred at SY 67358510, SY 67408499; SY 67628497 (scrub covered), and SY 67758502; as delineated on R.C.H.M. strip-field plan <2>.

At SY 67648526, is a single, poorly developed 5.0m. wide strip lynchet (depicted on OS 25" 1959); now tree planted. <3>
