Full Description

AC Archaeology conducted an archaeological desk based assessment and field survey during 1995 of land adjacent to the former Foster’s School, Tinney’s Lane, Sherborne.

Evidence for extensive N-S aligned ridge and furrow was revealed. Cartographic evidence suggests that this formed part of the medieval open fields of Newland in an area known as ‘Fieldwalls’ in the 17th century.

Approximately 57 individual ridges were planned, with variable condition and generally more prominent to the east (1).

The remains of ridge and furrow trends were also recorded through geophysical survey in the eastern part of the site (2).

The area has since been developed for housing and playing fields.
