‘The Durotrigian Burial. This grave was found in June, 1967 as a result of mechanical digging which displaced the lower limbs and slightly damaged the skull. Excavation was then carried out by the school team. The skeleton lay on its back in an oval scoop in the Chalk, orientated east-west with the head to the east, turned to face the south. The right arm lay parallel with the body, the left arm was flexed across it with the hand resting on the pelvis (Fig. 3). The bones appeared to be those of a mature adult.
In the grave were six pots (Figs. 4 and 5), five of which were arranged in a row along the south side of the scoop, the sixth (No. 2 in Fig. 5) was located in the region of the legs and was recovered from the spoil. Fig 3 shows five pots carefully replaced in position after excavation. Beneath the skull were two ribs of lamb.’
