Monument record MDO2387 - The Vines, Long Street, Sherborne; medieval pit

Evidence for a medieval pit was revealed during an AC Archaeology evaluation at The Vines, Long Street in September 1991. Its function is difficult to ascertain in the absence of associated features.

AC Archaeology conducted an archaeological evaluation at The Vines, Long Street during 1991 in advance of the determination of a planning application for redevelopment. Two trenches were excavated by machine parallel to the Long Street frontage.

The trenches revealed some evidence for medieval activity, including an isolated pit [31] in Trench 2. It was oval in plan, measuring 0.5m wide and 0.8m long. The fill was a mid-brown silt containing abundant burnt stone, lumps of clay, flecks of mortar and a single sherd of medieval pottery. Its function is difficult to ascertain in the absence of associated features.

The lack of medieval artefacts within the overlying deposits suggests that there was not intensive occupation within the proposed development area.
