Full Description

Jubilee Hall, originally known as Weymouth Public Hall, was built in 1887 and demolished in 1989. It was designed by Crickmay and Son and was a large rectangular brick building with side aisles and a stage at its western end. The buildings most notable feature was its arched roof trusses constructed of sections of vertically-aligned, laminated wood, doweled and bolted together to form a span of 60 feet. The roof structure was carried on a series of cast-iron columns. In the 1890s the hall was converted into a theatre. This involved the enclosure of the open roof structure by a board ceiling rendering redundant the clerestory windows and roof glazing. In 1929 the building was converted into the Regent Cinema by the cinema architect, W E Trent. Trent, who was architect to the Gaumont-British Picture Corporation, inserted an entirely new decorative scheme into the building without significantly altering the original structure. The theatre conversion was completely obscured by the new fibrous plaster decoration. Trent also built a balcony at the entrance end of the hall. <2>
