Full Description

"In the middle of the village are the remains of another cross" [i.e. Besides that in the churchyard]. <1>

The village cross, which stood on the green opposite the Tiger's Head Inn was removed to its present position opposite the "Old Rectory" House at Broomhill during the incumbency of the Rev. Wm. PACE (1794-1845). The cross is probably of 14thc date. On the base is an O.S. Bench Mark. <3>

The remains of a 15thc. wayside cross which consists of a square shaft within an octagonal-to-square base. The remains of a carved figure is visible on a bracket on the W. face of the shaft. <4>

The original site of this village cross is now occupied by the modern road junction. The cross is of sandstone and set in the road verge. The base or socket stone is 1.5 m. square at the top, and approximately 0.6 m. high. In this is set the square shaft with edge mouldings and a poorly defined carving on the W. face. The shaft is broken off, its height being 1.5m. <5>

No additional information was gained relating to the conflicting dates of removal of this cross as in Auths 3 and 4. However Authy 4 dated 1863 is a 3rd Ed.n., and it is possible that the cross was removed prior to this date but an amendment never made. Type of cross accepted from Auth 3 plus topographical situation of original site. <6>
