Monument record MDO22590 - Tobacco pipe factory, North Street, Wareham

The remains of a tobacco pipe kiln were observed during demolition. Pipes and a piece of fire-brick with pipes embedded were subsequently recovered from spoil from the site.

'An 18th-century tobacco-pipe factory at Wareham. Mr P. A. Brown notes evidence for the making of clay tobacco-pipes at a site on the east side of North Street, Wareham, close to the south side of St. Martin's Church. Some remains of a small kiln were apparently exposed and destroyed in recent demolition work. The pipes have plain undecorated bowls slightly waisted below the lip, which is parallel with the axis of the stem, and they have a spur foot. Mr R. Prior, of Belros, Worth Matravers, who collected some of the pipes, also has a piece of partly vitrified sandy clay or fire-brick, some 7 by 5 cms in cross-section, of which the two broader faces have parallel stems embedded in them.'
