Full Description

Weymouth Union Workhouse was built in 1836 on the site of an earlier workhouse. The building was designed by two of the Guardians, Thomas Dodson and Thomas Hill Harvey. Their design was based on Sampson Kempthorne's model cruciform workhouse. The workhouse is faced with Portland stone, with dressings to the facade and slate roofs. A Venereal Disease clinic was added in 1937 and the workhouse (by this time a Public Assistance Institution) became Portway Hospital after the Second World War. At the time of a RCHME (Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England) survey in 1992, the buildings were being converted into residential use and some of the buildings had been demolished. It now (2005) known as Union Court.
