Full Description

<1> Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society, 1953, Proceedings of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society for 1952, 87 (Serial). SDO52.

'Area ii. Western slope of spur S.S.W. of Druce Higher Barn, Puddletown; SY(30)/740967. (D.C.M. 1952.18). Scatter of sherds in arable field, about 300 ft. contour. Mostly coarse hadn-made ware of Iron Age A appearance, but also several R.B. sherds, including Samian. Iron Age B or C wares could be represented amongst some indeterminate smoothed black ware fragments, but only one hand-made bead-rim is at all diagnostic.'

<2> Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society, 1953, Proceedings of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society for 1952, 88 (Serial). SDO52.

‘Area iii. Eastern slope of same spur, in downland recently broken up by the plough; SY(30)/743967. (D.C.M. 1952.19). Ware of precisely similar character and distribution to last, but in greater profusion. The sherds were found in a scatter over the whole of the field west of the track to Well House Cottages and Druce Higher Barn, but thickest on the lower slopes in the southern half of the field. Proximity of a settlement is suggested not so much by the profusion of sherds, although this was greater than the usual scatter probably derived from manuring, as by the unusually high proportion of pre-Roman hand-made ware, come of which consisted of larger fragments than were usual. Areas ii and iii, which are only 300 yards apart, may well be taken together, and their material regarded as rubbish from an unlocated settlement.’

<3> Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society, 1953, Proceedings of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society for 1952, 88 (Serial). SDO52.

‘Area iv. Arable field south of Well House Cottages, Puddletown; SY(30)/743970. (D.C.M. 1952.21) One sherd of hand-made ware of Iron Age A appearance among several indeterminate fragments; remainder R.B., including part of the base of decorated Samian form 37, the splayed cavetto-rim of a relatively late type cooking pot, and a base of a beaker of New Forest type with purplish matt slip.’
