Full Description

A burial found during excavation of a trench for underpinning. Pottery finds suggested that this wing of the building was constructed in the fourteenth century, and the excavators interpreted the burial as being earlier, and possibly associated with an early phase of the adjacent medieval church.

The skeleton of an adult was lying extended in a supine position, aligned west-east, with the right arm flexed across the abdomen. It was in a narrow sub-rectangular grave cut filled with a mid-brown clay loam containing fragments of fourteenth-century pottery. Only the upper part of the burial was affected by the works; this part was recorded, removed and subsequently re-buried in the churchyard.
