Monument record MDO20709 - Stone Drain, Guildhall Car Park, Lyme Regis

A stone lined and capped drain constructed of unmortared blue lias discovered in a test pit against the east wall of Lyme Regis Museum. It ran roughly N-S and probably was part of the drainage of the Guildhall to the north.

A drain or culvert was exposed in an engineer's testpit against the east wall of Lyme Regis Museum in 2006. It appeared to run roughly N-S and was found at a depth of 0.45m below the surface. It was constructed of unmortared blue lias with substantial lias capping stones. It may have been built as part of the drainage for the Guildhall. No dating evidence was recovered but the drain appeared to pre-date the cottages that formerly stood on this site, some of which were built in the 17th century. The Guildhall was first constructed in the 16th century. (1) (2)
