Full Description

A mortared stone drain was exposed in the front garden of The Thatch, Uplyme Road, Lyme Regis in 1998. It lay at a depth of 1.5 m below the surface. The base of the drain was of flints pushed into the underlying clay, the sides were of mortared lias pieces and the capping was of large roughly squared lias. The drain ran downhill from Uplyme Road into the valley of the Lym. It may have been constructed as part of the road improvements of the Bath coach route of the 1770s. (1)
