‘Morning Post, Monday, 19/10/1885: “ The steamship Tern, of Cork, bound from Liverpool to Rotterdam, and the Clarinda, of Sunderland, bound to Cronstadt, collided on Saturday night, about 7 o’clock, when about 13 miles north-east of St. Catherine’s. The Clarinda sank about two hours after the collision. The hands were saved and landed at Southampton by the Tern, which vessel has received considerable damage and will come into Southampton dock for survey and repairs.” Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette, Tuesday, 1/12/1885: A lengthy report on the claim by the owners of the Clarinda on the owners of the Tern to recover damages for their loss. There was a counter claim by the owners of the Tern. It ended after much debate by the judge dismissing both claim and counter claim.’
