Full Description
Castleton may have originated in the 12th century as a small settlement of Bishop Roger's retainers drawn up close to the castle. Later it became a borough. [1]
"Castleton is a street about 300 yards long at the east end of which stands the castle" Hutchins states that it had 50 houses in living memory but no more than 30 at the time of writing (taken from the 3rd edition of Hutchins published in 1873). It had its own market held weekly on Thursdays near the castle and a fair on August 5th. [2]
Castleton is mentioned in the Lay Subsidy of 1332 as a borough containing 13 taxpayers [3].
