Full Description

In 1388 Walter Wilkyn of London, draper, had bought £400 worth of wood (wode?), pepper and saffron at Genoa, but the ship on which they were carried was ‘tempest tossed’ off Dorset and her cargo cast ashore. Thirteen men escaped but the abbot of Abbotsbury and others took the merchandise ‘as if it had been wreck.’ Four knights were ordered to enquire in to the circumstances and if necessary to make restitution, [Cal Pat R, 1385-9, 552].
