Full Description

Mountfield House is a large mid-19th century house, situated in its own grounds. It is in an Italianate style, built of yellow/grey brick with stone dressings. There is an earlier northern range in stone rubble suggesting the present main house was an extension or replacement of an existing building.(1) The earlier building, with the northern range, is shown on the 1845 Bradpole Tithe Map (2). The form of the house on the Tithe Map suggests that the present house is a mid-19th century extension of the original house with the addition of the front bay windows and the orangery to the west.

The Bradpole Tithe Map and Apportionment describe it as 'Mountfield House, Garden & Lawn' owned by James Templer and occupied by Henry Templer (2). Mountfield is not mentioned in the directories prior to 1855, when it was the residence of Henry Augustus Templer, esq. (3).
