Full Description
Melville Square is a planned development of workers' terraced housing, of mid-late 19th century date. It was built across combined plots to the rear of the early 19th century terrace, 110-122 East Street. This allowed for houses of improved quality with windows and open space to the front and rear. Melville Square consists of three terraces, two near-parallel to East Street and one at right angles to it. The terrace nearest East Street (6-13 Melville Square) has smaller, more closely-spaced houses, built of rubble with brick dressings and is probably the first phase of the development. The other terraces have larger houses, built of brick. (1)
