Full Description
A ropery existed to the rear of 5 West Allington from at least 1823/4 until 1840. The 1840 Alington Tithe Map Apportionment records a ‘Warehouse, Houses, Garden & Spinning Walk’ owned by James Hodder and occupied by John Hill and others (1). James Hodder is mentioned in the 1823/4 Trade Directory as a Line, Twine and Shoethread manufacturer in Allington (2). A John Hodder is mentioned in the 1830 Trade Directory as a Line, Twine and Shoethread manufacturer in Allington (2), perhaps this is the same place. No ropewalk or spinning way is marked on the 1890 Ordnance Survey map (3), so it is probable thatit had long ceased to be operational by this date.
Nothing now survives on the site.
