Sank following collision with the ss Bellcairn of West Hartlepool

Shields Daily Gazette - 4/8/1884: 'The loss of the Newcastle Steamer Britannia', a dispatch from London, dated Aug. 1, reports as follows:- "Captain Walker, of the Ocean (s), from Spain for Antwerp, telegraphed from Southampton as follows;- Put into land 40 head of cattle, picked up yesterday 12 miles off Portland, ex-steamerBritannia, of Newcastle, sunk by collision with Bellcairn, (s). Advise underwriters, cattle in good condition. The cargo of the Britannia (s),from New York for London, sunk off Portland by collision, consisted of 669226 lbs oil cake, 25 cases tobacco cuttings, 3 cases hardware, 19 cases paper, 88,426 bushels oats and 17,207 bushels wheat."
