Full Description

A number of post-medieval features were observed during a watching brief to the rear of 27 East Street, Bridport, undertaken by Context One Archaeological Services Ltd in 2006 (1). A large pit containing post-medieval finds were recorded, together with a well with ?limestone steyning were encountered just to the rear of the existing building on the East Street frontage and another large post-medieval pit was found further to the rear of the property. In the latter pit, a piece of worked wood was recovered, which was identified by the excavator as possibly part of a rudder from a small boat. (1)

In addition to the pits, two ditches were encountered in the area immediately behind the existing buildings. One was identified as a possible foundation trench for one of the outbuildings previously on the site, the other was of unknown orientation and unrecorded function. (1)
