Full Description

A large number of pits, a well and several post holes of 16th-18th century were found during the evaluation and excavation of the site of the former Fire Station , South Street, Bridport by Wessex Archaeology in 1995-96. (1)

The pits, well, post holes and a shallow ditch lay to the rear of the street frontage. About ten of these features could be dated to the 16th-early 17th century and the remainder were probably later 17th or 18th century in date. A line of six irregular pits between 2-3m across and up to 1.4m deep were found in a line along the southern side of the site, perpetuating the line of the earlier, medieval, property boundary. Several post holes were also found along this line. The well, dated to the 16th-early 17th century, was circular with a stone lining and lay on the northern side of the excavation trench. One large subrectangular pit of later 17th-18th century date may have been a latrine. (1)
