Summary

Evidence for a possible WWII air raid shelter was recovered during an archaeological evaluation at the rear of 39 Cheap Street in 2004. this comprised a concrete and limestone structure at the northern end of Trench 2 in a location in which the landowner believed an air raid shelter had formerly existed.

Full Description

AC Archaeology conducted a desk based assessment and archaeological evaluation in advance of proposed residential/ commercial development at 39 Cheap Street during 2004. This comprised a review of historic maps, survey of existing buildings and the machine excavation of two trenches.

Trench 2 contained a concrete and limestone structure [203] at its northern end. The landowner provided information that a now infilled WWII air raid shelter was formerly present in this location. [1]
