Full Description
AC Archaeology conducted a desk based assessment and archaeological evaluation in advance of proposed residential/ commercial development at 39 Cheap Street during 2004. This comprised a review of historic maps, survey of existing buildings and the machine excavation of two trenches.
A map of 1733 shows the land use on the site in the 18th century. A building is shown at the rear of the site at this time which had been removed by the late 19th century. A trench was excavated in this location and identified evidence for a building of this date. The combination ‘…of building recording and map evidence suggests that parts of some of the existing buildings recorded date to the early 18th century, but most are likely to have been constructed around the middle of the 19th century to serve the needs of a butcher’s shop, which was established around that time.’ [1]
