Summary

A 3ft thickness of old road metalling was observed at various points along South Street, Sherborne during the excavation of a drainage trench in 1955. 12th century pottery was recovered from the base of the metalling and, opposite Gainsborough House, the metalling was iron stained and littered with brass pins of 16th-17th century date.

Full Description

ST 639164. A drainage trench in South Street showed underlying gravel eroded into channels by fluvial action, and C12th pottery on the surface. Road metalling up to three feet overlay this. A metalled road surface probably of early to mid-C17th date was also seen opposite Gainsborough House. (ST 6398 1634). (1)
