Abbotsbury was held by the staunchly royalist Strangway family during the civil war. In November 1644 parliamemtarian forces determined to take it. The skirmish began in St. Nicholas' church. Two bullet holes from that conflict can still be seen in the Jacobean canopy above the pulpit. Abbey House was then beseiged and set on fire resulting in an explosion which killed up to 50 Parliamentarians who were looting the house.
