Full Description

M. Ridley conducted archaeological excavations at Christchurch Priory garderobe during 1969-70. Among the finds was a small assemblage of residual Roman material.

This comprised six sherds of 3rd-4th century Roman pottery, including a small New Forest mortaria base and three New Forest colour coated sherds; a tile fragment with curvilinear roller stamping; a glass handle probably of late1st or 2nd century type.

These finds may indicate the presence of a small roman settlement in the vicinity of the Priory, although the tile may suggest a more substantial building.
