Monument record MDO19419 - Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester; Roman building G516

Please read our .

Summary

In the later 2nd-3rd century AD a range of stone-built structures were built on a property to the north of Roman building G555, as revealed in excavations by Wessex Archaeology in advance of the redevelopment of the former Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester in 2000-2001. Further elements were recorded in during a watching brief undertaken by Christopher Sparey Green in 1963. These structures revealed a complex sequence of repair, remodelling and rebuilding and the full details are not clear. A rectangular building found in 1963 forms part of this structural sequence and the eastern half of this building was excavated in 2000-2001. The postulated corridor along the south side of the 1963 building can now be identified as the boundary wall between this property and Building G555 to the south. To the north was an open area covered with extensive layers of chalk and silt. A chalk rubble footing was built on top of these surfaces and may have belonged to a late extention to the stone footed-structures.
