Full Description
This poorly preserved early Roman timber building was found during excavations by Wessex Archaeology in advance of the redevelopment of the former Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester in 2000-2001.
Building G533 was a fairly poorly defined rectangular post and shallow slot structure. It lay to the south of the early Roman timber buildings G506 and G507, within a large open area or enclosure. This structure is poorly dated but is perhaps part of the earliest phase of urban development in this part of the Roman town of Durnovaria, in the later 1st century and 2nd century AD.
This building was set back from the postulated frontage of a N-S road which is projected to run just to the east of the excavated area. No evidence for its precise function was obtained, but it may have been industrial, rather than domestic in purpose.
