Full Description
This early Roman timber building was found during excavations by Wessex Archaeology in advance of the redevelopment of the former Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester in 2000-2001.
Building G507 was a timber beamslot structure, partially exposed in the northern end of the excavations. The full plan of this structure was not revealed. Immediately to the south and east of this structure were the remains of an associated flint cobbled surface. This structure has been tentatively dated to the late 1st century AD and represents part of the earliest phase of urban development in this part of the Roman town of Durnovaria. A number of pits were found within the area of this building, containing late 1st-2nd century AD material. At least one pit cut the footings of this building suggesting it had a fairly short life.
This building was set back from the postulated frontage of a N-S road which is projected to run just to the east of the excavated area. No evidence for its precise function was obtained, but it may have been industrial, rather than domestic in purpose.
