Full Description

R. A. Hills conducted an excavation at Druitt Gardens, Christchurch, during 1971 in advance of the construction of the Wick Lane car park. These excavations were subsequently published as a short note in DNHAS monograph 5 (1).

A machine-dug trench approximately 70m long and 1.8m wide revealed a small Iron Age pit [F3] cut 0.5m into natural. The pit contained a contaminated group of 48 sherds and a large 2nd-3rd century BC rim sherd occurred in a derived context, although it may have originated from this pit. The pit was probably cut by another pit [F3a] which contained stone rubble but was not excavated further.
