Full Description

M. Fox for Poole Museums, directed a rescue excavation in advance of the Dolphin development, Church Street, Christchurch, during 1974-5 (site X11.3). The excavation was subsequently published in DNHAS monograph 5 (1).

The excavations revealed several post medieval walls and robber trenches. No definite post-medieval structures could be identified however.

A partially robbed 16th century limestone wall [F5], 0.5m wide, at the SE end of the site had been re-used as a foundation by a 19th century brick wall. The 16th century wall terminated in a stone lined gully [F7] in use until the 16th century. A post-medieval stone drain [F85] ran at right angles to wall [F5].

15th-16th century robber trench [F105] was overlain by two fragmentary areas of limestone paving, and a third undated stone wall [F33] extended only slightly into the excavation area.

From the evidence available it is not possible to identify any post-medieval structures and it is possible that some of the walls were boundary walls. [F5 & F105] in particular are in logical places for the demarcation of plots.
