Full Description
K. Jarvis directed excavations in the tenement strip at the rear of the High Street frontage, Staggs site (X12) Christchurch, during 1976. The results were subsequently published as a short note in DNHAS monograph 5 (1).
The excavations revealed evidence for a structure [S1] at the SW end of the site. This comprised a double row of undated stake holes [42] within a slight trench, sealed by topsoil and cut into natural gravel. These merged into less well defined complexes of stake holes [41 & 43].
The structure was at least 2.6m wide, possibly more than 7.7m long and extended outside the excavated area. There was no evidence of function or date, although the report groups it with medieval features. Thie SW end of the site was part of a medieval property defined at the back (eastern end) by a series of ditches and a break of slope. Structure S1 seems to occupy this plot.
