Full Description
K. Jarvis directed excavations in the tenement strip at the rear of the High Street frontage, Staggs site (X12) Christchurch, during 1976. The results were subsequently published as a short note in DNHAS monograph 5 (1).
The excavations revealed evidence for medieval features adjacent to structure [S1] at the SW end of the site. These comprised a 14th-15th century trench [69] and two 13th-15th century gullies [61 & 63] that probably marked the rear fence of a plot fronting on High Street. These linear features were cut into a late medieval yellow/grey sandy layer.
There were also several stake holes [527, 529 etc] sealed by the late medieval sandy layer. These stake holes may relate to a complex of stake holes [43] near structure S1 and may define a possible late medieval or earlier structure.
