Full Description
K. Jarvis directed excavations in the tenement strip at the rear of the High Street frontage, Staggs site (X12) Christchurch, during 1976. The results were subsequently published as a short note in DNHAS monograph 5 (1).
The excavations revealed evidence for a structure [S2] in the central of the site. This comprised a rectangular timber structure 3.6m wide and at least 4.8m long. One wall consisted of a post trench [204] with seven post-holes. Three large post holes [188, 262 &192] with smaller post holes [357, 366 & 510] may indicate the extent of the structure, although several alternatives exist. One would include the slot [216] and exclude post hole [262].
This structure is attributed to the 15th century on the basis of 13 sherds, including 2 rims, from slot [204], and three not closely datable sherds from [192].
The central area of the site formed a separate plot in the medieval period for which the structures [S2-3] were the main features.
