Full Description
K. Jarvis directed excavations in the tenement strip at the rear of the High Street frontage, Staggs site (X12) Christchurch, during 1976. The results were subsequently published as a short note in DNHAS monograph 5 (1).
The excavations revealed evidence for a structure [S6] in the NE area of the site. This structure lay immediately beneath the topsoil and extended only 0.6m from the NE baulk. It consisted of two post trenches [405 & 458] 0.5m deep. Prior to construction the area had been cleared to natural gravel, then covered with loose gravel.
The dating evidence for [S6] is three 13th-14th century body sherds and this is confirmed by the relationship with the 15th-16th century [S7] which cuts [S6].
This structure may have been located, along with three other structures [S4, S5, S7], within a medieval plot at the NE end, separated from the rest of the site by ditch [54, 73] during the 13th-14th century.
