Summary

Excavation in Sainsbury’s car park, Christchurch, during 1981 (site W5), revealed a mid-19th century pit crammed with local, Verwood type, earthenware. A further 19th century rubbish pit was situated in the north of the trench. Subsequent observation in the general area revealed further 19th century disturbances along Pound Lane, cellars, pits and so forth.

Full Description

Wessex Archaeological Committee conducted an excavation in Sainsbury’s car park, Christchurch, during 1981(site W5) in order to investigate activity north of the medieval town defences. The results were subsequently published in PDNHAS volume 105 (Davies 1983).

The excavation revealed a mid-19th century pit crammed with local, Verwood type, earthenware. A further 19th century rubbish pit was situated in the north of the trench. Subsequent observation in the general area revealed further 19th century disturbances along Pound Lane, cellars, pits and so forth.

The pits observed in the excavation may have been located to the rear of properties fronting onto the north side of Pound Lane.
