Full Description
Wessex Archaeological Committee conducted an excavation at the rear of the old Town Hall, High Street Christchurch, during 1981 (site W8). (Davies 1983)
Excavations located 12th/13th century features including postholes and gullies were excavated. No coherent structural plan could be defined. The evidence attests to the sparseness of Medieval and post-Medieval occupation in the north-east sector of the town.
The excavation revealed 68 post-holes of varying size and depth spread across mainly in the north and east parts of the site. None could be grouped to form a particularly coherent building, though various ‘walls’ could be postulated. Where dated they tended to be 12th-13th century in date, apart from three: [45] which may be 15th century; [68 & 127] which may be 14th century or later.
