Full Description

(SY 69289076) The Town Hall, High East Street (still shown as Corn Exchange on OS 25" 1971) is a two-storeyed brick and stone dressed building designed by Banjamin Ferrey and built in 1847-48. The ground floor which was originally an open corn exchange, has an arcade of five arches to the south and two to the west, all of moulded stonework, with four-centred heads; the upper storey formerly served as an assembly hall and council
chamber and contains a large oriel window on the west. A clock-turret at the south-western corner is an addition of 1864, and according to Pevsner there is a "portal, with incongruous Romanesque foliage capitals" built in 1876. <2>
