Full Description
A hoard of roman 4th century prototype and copied coins. Found within the inner and outer ramparts near the NW corner of Poundbury Camp. Ian Ellis found 90 coins, nearly all AE 3 of Constantius II with reverse `Fel Temp Repartis'. The coins were stuck together on the underside of a flat stone in spoil mechanically excavated in 1940 when the face of the inner rampart on the west and south side of the camp were scarped. About the same place, Ian Ellis and others have found about 120 coins of similar type between 1940-3 when the 90 (included in the total) were found. It is probable that they are all part of a single hoard, which was probably hidden at or near the forward base of the inner rampart, or perhaps in the near side of the ditch itself. The Dorset County Museum has 73 of the coins, the finder 3, and the remainder are dispersed. Of the 76 coins, one is of Constantius Gallus, and the remainder of Constantius II, Aug. Of the coins with 'Fel Temp Repartio' on the reverse, 50 are regular issues, and 24 are irregular copies.(1)
