Full Description
A Roman intaglio depicting Mars standing right with head in profile right was found in May 1823 in the garden of the Rev. Wm. Churchill, Colliton, Dorchester. The gem is now lost and survives only as a wax impression on card in the Dorset County Museum. This card is labelled 'The impression of a cornelian seal set in a copper thumb ring, supposed to be Roman…' In the impression Mars wears military boots and an elaborate plumed helmet; otherwise he is naked. In his left hand he holds a spear. Dimensions 18mm x 11mm.
