Summary

Infant burial D607 was a contracted foetal/neonate inhumation on its left side with head to the west, buried in an irregular grave aligned N-S against the west wall of Building R16, found during the 1966-1979 exavations at Poundbury. A single coffin nail was recovered from the grave. It was one of nine infant burials found within Building R16.

Full Description

Found during the excavations directed by Christopher Sparey Green, for the Dorchester Excavation Committee, between 1966 and 1979 during development of the Grove Trading Estate on the eastern slopes of Poundbury Camp, Dorchester (1) (2). The numbers in square brackets below refer to the context and feature numbers used in the published report and archive (1)(2)(3).

Infant burial [D607] was a contracted foetal/neonate inhumation lying on its left side with the head to the west, buried in an irregular grave within Building R16 (1) (2). A single coffin nail was found within the grave. It was one of nine infant burials found within Building R16.
