Monument record MDO19134 - Poundbury, Dorchester; Late Roman Infant burial D582

Infant burial D582 was a foetal/neonate crouched inhumation on its right side, with the head to the south, buried in a shallow oval grave aligned N-S within the northern half of Building R16, found during the 1966-1979 exavations at Poundbury. It was one of nine infant burials found within Building R16.

Found during the excavations directed by Christopher Sparey Green, for the Dorchester Excavation Committee, between 1966 and 1979 during development of the Grove Trading Estate on the eastern slopes of Poundbury Camp, Dorchester (1) (2). The numbers in square brackets below refer to the context and feature numbers used in the published report and archive (1)(2) (3).

Infant burial [D582] was a foetal/neonate crouched inhumation on its right side and with the head to the south, buried in a shallow oval grave aligned N-S within the northern half of Building R16 (1) (2). It was in a poor state of preservation (2). It was one of nine infant burials found within Building R16.
